Most Relied On

I am a public transportation girl! I do not drive therefore I rely on public transportation to get me to and fro.   This is what it looked like in 84 just before they put it underground.

The southern part of the Washington Street Elevated lasted until 1987, when the Southwest Corridor was opened, rerouting service from discontinued elevated trackage to new facilities in a parallel existing rail corridor. The closure of the Washington Street Elevated south of downtown Boston brought the end of rapid transit service to the Roxbury neighborhood, which was replaced with the Silver Line Bus Rapid Transit.

1985 project that documented Boston’s elevated rail system prior to its 1987 dismantling. The elevated Orange Line, known simply as the El, served as fast and dependable transportation above Washington Street, from Chinatown to Dudley Square, between 1901 and 1987
