My Little DYI

In 2009 I purchased my first place.  For years I've been a huge HGTVDIY show watcher.   I told the family I wouldn't watch anymore once I purchased a home.  Yah right!!! That is my Saturday morning routine after breakfast to watch all the shows and ooh and aah!  I know I am not as good as this girl Iffy  but I try.

I was raised by a single mom who had a little DIY in her too.  We put together furniture and did small around the house fix it uppers.  When we moved we were our own moving team.
When each of her kids moved into their own places(including me) mom and I were the "help you get settled in" crew.  Now I team up with Joe and do projects.  A plus we have our own home to do them on.  He knows a lot of extras like carpentry and electrical.  He likes the DIY shows too.  But since we've purchased our home I have sort of run out of DIY spunk.  I still watch the shows but I just want everything done yesterday!  Which goes back to my word of the year Patience. I hate to read directions but I want things assembled already?? Yeah, I know are you nuts?   Everything needs to be lined up and ready to go.

So we have been taking on little projects here and there.  Our biggest thing is deciding on paint colors for the inside of the house.  I think this should have been done prior to being really settled in but OK.  We had to change our children's rooms to better suit their ages and access to the main bathroom.  So we took on the first paint project which was my daughters room.  I made this sign for her door to match her newly painted room by daddy and decorated by mommy! She has a big girl room now! Oh, I want to move in.

  1. Very cool room!!! I bet she really likes it! The girls helped paint their rooms when we moved in. My middle's room is purple too! :) I was really into HGTV for MANY years. I have learned a lot. Then the programming changed and then I got rid of my Sat. dish... turned it off. Now.. no decorating shows. :( (no FoodNetwork either, my other fave). We just don't watch enough TV to justify the rising costs for the very basic package we had. But, hubby and I are very handy too. I taught him how to cut trimwork. I know how. He had hardest time mitering corners. He works for an elec. wholesale house and can do all kinds of elec. And the things he can't, he has connections with all the electricians that come through there. ;) He can do plumbing (he tapped into the plumbing and hooked up a new laundry tub in the laundry room where there never was one). Last summer, he installed a sprinkler system in the yard. We replaced a patio door and two windows, of which now I will be spending the spring varnishing. We have painted. I have sewn duvet covers and shams. We built our deck ourselves. We do it all ourselves. Very seldom do we hire it out. I helped a scrappy friend, over the phone, that lives in Louisiana fix something with her kitchen sink.. talked her through it. LOL There is something to be said for doing a job yourself! To look at something you did and be proud.

  2. Really enjoyed the post. We have tackled a few DIY projects around here too. It is a great feeling once the project is done. I keep saying I would love to take a class from electricity and plumbing...

  3. Love the makeover. The sign is adorable. I'm sure we'll see a lamp shade embellished in a few months. You did an awesome job and I love how she got into the transformation!
